Calhoun County was formed in 1825 from Pike County, the county seat is Hardin and the county was named for Vice President John C. Calhoun. Calhoun County is a narrow 37-mile long peninsula of mostly high, rolling ground located between the Mississippi River and the Illinois River. Its current county boundaries include a total of 283.58 square miles of which 253.82 square miles are land and 29.75 square miles of water.
