ILGenWeb Project: Jersey County

County Coordinator: Sheri Iamele

Jersey County was founded on February 28, 1839, and was formed out of Greene County. The county was named for the state of New Jersey, from which many of the early settlers emigrated - which was itself named for the Channel Island of Jersey in Great Britain. The area quickly evolved into several small agricultural communities. As the area soon began to flourish, a county government was established and a courthouse was built in Jerseyville, the county seat. The present courthouse is a magnificent architectural structure that was built in 1893. The current county boundaries include a total of 377.13 square miles of which 369.27 square miles are land and 7.86 square miles of water.

Online since 1996, the mission of Jersey County ILGenWeb is to provide free genealogical and historical resources for our area. Jersey County ILGenWeb is brought to you 100% by volunteers. In order for Jersey County ILGenWeb to continue to grow we rely on data contributions from researchers like you. All of the contributions you provide to this project will forever remain with the Jersey County ILGenWeb and USGenWeb Project.
