Kankakee County, named after the Kankakee River, was formed in 1853 out of the north part of Iroquois County and the south part of Will County. In 1855 the two western townships of Norton and Essex were taken from Vermilion County and added to Kankakee County. The current county boundaries include a total of 681.36 square miles of which 676.56 square miles are land and 4.81 square miles of water.
